As primarily a landscape painter, I begin each painting on site, or plein air. The work is a kind record of the experience.

After evacuating our home during a wildfire, I began making 'narrative' paintings: still life compositions of objects of great personal value.

My father died last fall ten days after his 100th birthday. He was still living at home because my entire family supported him. None of us lived near him so these last years have been a challenging period of love and commitment.

Looking for ways to  say goodbye to this foundational man in my life, I began a series of large paintings. I have made three so far. I think of them as a Grief Series. They are each 36 × 60” oil paintings. A friend who is a beautiful painter called them “messy and emotional”. I love that descriptor. Like grief, to me they are also beautiful and fluid and surprising.
